laprincesseperdue:

Trans women, individuals who were assigned male at birth but identify and live as women, CAN breastfeed. It is possible, and totally awesome! Health care providers, volunteer breastfeeding counsellors, and trans women themselves need to learn this important, empowering fact.

Yes, men can lactate so trans women should be able to ask well, given the right hormones and treatments. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=strange-but-true-males-can-lactate

I’m just about to give up…I feel like a failure to my son.

You did the best you could with what you got and the information you have. Don’t feel guilty! As long as you love and feed your child, that’s all that matters. If you still want to breastfeed and need help seek a lactation consultant or doctor or feel free to ask me for general questions.

Smoking while breastfeeding/pumping? What are the rules. I’m not smoking, but I’m craving super hard and was just curious what the rules were on it. Any ideas?

Look up nicotine and breastfeeding online. I’ve had several posts about nicotine before so i don’t repeat my info too often. You can look up nicotine and other drug effects on the LactMed website http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT

If you must smoke, do so after feedings, away from the baby, outside, and with something like a smoking jacket to avoid 2nd and 3rd hand smoking.

Just found out that my breastmilk is sweet. That’s interesting, I guess I didn’t know what to expect really.

(I found this out because I absentmindedly licked a few stray drops off of my wrist)

yeah….that thing is pure sugar…no wonder why babies like it so much. I hear it tastes gross though if it’s not fresh.

Just pumped for the first time with a manual breast pump. Let me just say. Fuck that. That’s way too much work. I’d rather just let her eat normally. Idk. Any suggestions or tips on pumping ladies? Good electric pump?

How can I tell if the shield fits my breast?!

I make so much milk but my boobs only produce about half an ounce total when pumping. I know i still have milk in there and i know i make a lot of it. And i need to be able to pump…getting really frustrated…

playfulparenting:

fascinating article. I don’t really have the brain right now to research this super much, but I would be interested to hear what people think about this!

This is just really shocking to me, because I’ve heard so often that nutrition has little effect on the quality of your breastmilk. And it made sense to me, because its an evolutionary advantage for mother’s in times of famine. But, this makes me really rethink things, & also concerns me about my own levels of nutrition (i.e. lazily eating processed foods, etc).

This is a strange story in that if the baby had a deficiency in B12 and vitamin A, then how come the vegan mom didn’t show any signs of pernicious anemia or vitamin A deficiencies to notice? There must have been something wrong with the baby’s absorptive functions in the ileum or something for it to go unnoticed with the mom. There could even be a possible chance for her to overdose on Vitamin A during her pregnancy. Vitamin A is known to be a teratogen in high dosages during pregnancy.

Not sure how I’m going to talk my husband into it, or if Emery will even try, but I’m really not having any luck at all getting her to latch no matter what I do.

how old is the baby? pretty hard to figure out the latch problem without the age haha
